Smishing

is a fraud attack where text messages, supposedly from a reputable company or organisation, are sent containing fraudulent URLs to mobile subscribers. Once a subscriber clicks on the URL, they may be lured into providing account information, or they may cause their device to be infected by malware. There has been a sharp rise in Smishing attacks globally since the onset of the pandemic, as fraudsters have used the Covid-19 pandemic to send plausible messages that unwary subscribers are likely to open.
